Tips on Preventing Wrinkles and Age Spots on Your Face or Body
A proper and consistent skincare routine is essential for maintaining healthy, glowing, and youthful skin – and this goes for your face and body! The skin on your arms, legs, hands, and feet are just as susceptible to the elements and conditions like dryness. Regular cleansing and moisturizing are essential, but sometimes additional treatments are needed to give your skin an extra boost!
Facial peels are a popular treatment with many benefits – and you can get the same benefits for your body with a body peel. Read on to learn what to expect from a body peel and how to ensure you achieve the best possible results!
How to Prepare for a Body Peel
While chemical peels can be an intensive treatment, they’re very safe and non-invasive. That being said, there are still a few things you should do to prepare. You want to prepare your skin and body to receive the treatment safely and comfortably, while also maximizing results!
The following will help you have the best possible experience, and get great results:
- Don’t exfoliate for at least a week before treatment. This includes treatments like microdermabrasion and chemical exfoliations. This helps avoid over-exfoliating your skin and also prevents irritation during your peel treatment.
- Don’t use any retinoids or other topical medication for at least one week before your appointment.
- Don’t use makeup for at least a week before treatment. You don’t want to risk clogging pores or causing unnecessary breakouts before your face or body peel.
- Don’t do any waxing, shaving, epilating, or use depilatory products to remove hair before treatment.
- Avoid the sun for a few days before treatment. Even mild sun damage can cause irritation and further damage to your skin during a body peel. Avoid the sun and all artificial procedures like tanning beds.
- Stay hydrated. Especially on the day of treatment, avoid anything that may dry out your skin and drink plenty of water.
- There are certain medications you may need to avoid or stop taking before treatment. This can include NSAIDs, antihistamines, some contraceptives, antibiotics, and more. Your technician will give you specific recommendations based on the treatment you choose.
What to Expect from the Treatment?
Whether you’re getting a medical peel treatment on your face, body, or both, there are several steps to the process. Prior to treatment, your technician will help you decide which treatment is right for you, and you’ll take the necessary steps to prepare your body and skin.
Medical peels are a common treatment for the face, but they can also easily be applied to the face, chest, neck, and hands.
On the day of treatment, you can expect the following from the experience:
- It will start with a deep cleanse to prep your skin for the treatment.
- Next, we’ll exfoliate to remove any dead skin cells and ensure maximum penetration and optimal results.
- Degreasing is next, where we remove excess impurities and bring your skin the lowest pH we can with our all-natural degreasing solution.
- Before the peel is applied, a thin layer of vaseline is applied around your nose, lips, and eyes – if your face is included in the body peel treatment.
- Next is the peel itself. Depending on the level of peel you’ve chosen, we’ll apply up to four layers of the solution with a fan brush. Here, many clients report a feeling of warmth or mild itchiness.
- Once the peel is complete, we’ll apply a toner to restore balance and refresh the skin.
- Next, there is an optional step where we can apply a treatment complex to enhance the effects of the peel.
- Lastly, we apply zinc-based sunscreen to protect the skin immediately following treatment.
Aftercare
While it can be intense, the treatment is not invasive or damaging. There isn’t much recovery or downtime needed, though you may want to arrange for a ride home as you may feel sensitive or tired after treatment. Depending on the intensity of your peel, it can take between two and four weeks for your skin to heal fully.
In terms of aftercare, there are a few steps you must take to ensure optimal results and proper healing:
- Don’t use harsh or exfoliating products for at least one week after treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure as much as possible while your skin recovers from the treatment.
- If you must venture out into the sun, always apply a liberal amount of strong, good-quality sunscreen to protect your skin, especially in the treatment areas.
- Stay well hydrated to help your skin through the healing process.
Risks and Side Effects
A medical peel is an intensive but safe treatment that isn’t meant to break or damage your skin in any way. It’s suitable for most skin types and tones, but there are some minimal risks and side effects you should be aware of. Proper preparation and aftercare help to minimize these risks:
- Redness and mild swelling are normal, more severe reactions can include scabbing, flaking, peeling, and/or scarring.
- Changes in skin colour may occur.
- In severe cases, infection is a risk. This risk is significantly reduced with proper cleaning and careful aftercare.
